The Friends of Women Composers Society is a fun-loving and dedicated group of musicians and music lovers, who are united by a shared desire to experience and spread, the music of a diverse array of women composers. Founder, Heather Seaton, promoting the society and festival at a national music conference in Denver, CO. The Goals of our Society 1. To raise awareness about women composers and their music 2. To challenge the inequalities faced by women composers 3. To learn more about women composers and their works 4. To provide support and encouragement to all levels of contemporary women composers 5. To study, perform, and record the music of women composers ANNUAL FESTIVAL To fulfill its mission, the Society presents an annual women composers festival in March, in conjunction with National Women's History Month. The festival typically features multiple free events offered in various locations throughout the Greater Hartford area. Through the festival we present an array of enriching opportunities such as; lectures, concerts, readings, recordings, workshops, educational displays, performance opportunities, religious services, collaborations with local dancers and artists,a forum for networking, and more! We are proud to have presented and recorded the works of over 100 women composers in just ten years! We invite you, as performers, conductors, composers, speakers, valued audience members, and music lovers,to attend and/ or participate in our Society through this annual music outreach-festival. We rely on the generosity of our many volunteers to make this festival happen. Please consider participating in the festival or supporting us with a donation. For more information on the 11th Annual Women Composers Festival of Hartford (March 1- 6, 2011 Hartford, CT) please contact festival director, Daniel Morel. Friends of Women Composers Society Women Composer Advocacy Policy We encourage all music teachers to incorporate the works of women composers into the repertoire learned by their students. We encourage conductors and music directors to take a more balanced approach to programming - to put an end to the concerts (and entire concert seasons!) which fail to present even a single piece by a woman composer. We encourage the community to call radio stations and request music by women composers or meet with local conductors and let them know let them know that people are interested in hearing women's music. We ask parents to make learning about women composers a family activity. Encourage your children's music teachers and directors to equally expose students to women's music. We encourage music lovers and performers, to seek out, and pass on, the many wonderful recordings and scores of great music by women; help us to spread the word about what's out there! We encourage composers to take on projects such as editing and arranging women's music - to unearth forgotten, incomplete, or ignored scores and give them a new life... Many great pieces are now being resurrected... Need project suggestions? Just contact us! We encourage generous music patrons to consider commissioning $$ new works from women composers or to make a donation to offset the expenses that come with producing a large festival...
